St. Basil’s Cathedral
St. Basil’s Cathedral in Russia Tours
St. Basil’s Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat, is one of Moscow’s most recognizable landmarks. Located at the southern end of Red Square, the cathedral was commissioned by Ivan the Terrible to commemorate the Russian victory over the Khanates of Kazan and Astrakhan. Construction took place between 1555 and 1561.
The cathedral is renowned for its extraordinary architecture, featuring colourful onion-shaped domes, intricate patterns and distinctive towers arranged around a central church. Its richly decorated interiors contain a series of chapels, galleries and religious artworks, including frescoes, icons and ornamental details accumulated over centuries.
Today, St. Basil’s Cathedral is a museum and an important monument of Russian architectural and cultural heritage. Together with the Kremlin and Red Square, it forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage landscape of central Moscow.
