Kremlin Wall
Kremlin Wall in Russia Tours
The Kremlin Wall is one of the most iconic features of the Moscow Kremlin, forming a historic defensive enclosure around the Kremlin complex in the heart of Moscow. The present brick walls and towers were constructed mainly during the late 15th century, during the reign of Ivan III, when Moscow was undergoing major architectural and political development.
Built from distinctive red brick, the Kremlin Wall extends for more than 2 kilometres and is reinforced by numerous towers, each with its own architectural character. Among the most famous are Spasskaya Tower, Nikolskaya Tower, Troitskaya Tower and Borovitskaya Tower.
The walls surround important landmarks including the Cathedral Square, Grand Kremlin Palace and Armoury Chamber. Together with the Kremlin towers and Red Square, the Kremlin Wall forms part of Moscow’s remarkable historic ensemble, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
