Library of Celsus
Library of Celsus in Turkey Tours
The Library of Celsus is one of the most iconic monuments of the ancient city of Ephesus, near Selçuk in İzmir Province. Built in the 2nd century AD in honour of Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus, a Roman senator and governor of Asia, the library was both a monumental building and an important centre of knowledge in the ancient city.
The impressive two-storey façade is decorated with ornate columns, statues and architectural details. The four famous statues on the façade represented Wisdom, Knowledge, Intelligence and Virtue, symbolising the qualities associated with Celsus.
Although much of the original library has disappeared, the beautifully reconstructed façade remains one of the most recognisable sights of Ephesus. Visiting the Library of Celsus offers travellers a fascinating glimpse into Roman architecture, ancient scholarship and the cultural importance of Ephesus.
