Basilica Cistern in Turkey Tours

The Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnıcı) is one of Istanbul’s most remarkable Byzantine-era landmarks, located beneath the historic Sultanahmet district. Built during the reign of Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century, the enormous underground reservoir was designed to store and supply water to Constantinople.

The cistern is supported by hundreds of marble columns, arranged in rows beneath its vaulted ceiling. Among its most famous features are the two monumental Medusa head bases, which add to the mystery and character of the underground complex.

Today, visitors can walk along elevated pathways above the water and admire the illuminated columns, reflections and atmospheric architecture. The Basilica Cistern offers a fascinating glimpse into the engineering, architecture and daily life of Byzantine Constantinople.
