Camposanto Monumentale
Camposanto Monumentale in Italy Tours
The Camposanto Monumentale is the final monument built around Piazza del Duomo (Piazza dei Miracoli) in Pisa. Founded in 1277, it was created to provide a dignified, enclosed cemetery for the graves and Roman sarcophagi that had previously surrounded the Cathedral. Its long marble walls form the northern boundary of the famous square.
The Camposanto is renowned for its elegant Gothic cloister, Roman sarcophagi and remarkable medieval frescoes depicting themes of Life and Death. Among its most celebrated artworks is The Triumph of Death, attributed to Buonamico Buffalmacco, alongside works by Francesco Traini. The monument is considered one of the oldest Christian medieval architectures dedicated to the commemoration of the dead.
Together with the Cathedral, Baptistery and Leaning Tower, the Camposanto forms part of Pisa's UNESCO-listed Piazza del Duomo, recognized as a World Heritage Site since 1987.
