Karbala is a holy city in Iraq, significant for Shia Islam, where Imam Hussein (the Prophet Muhammad's grandson) and his small group were martyred in the 680 CE Battle of Karbala by the Umayyad Caliph Yazid I's forces, symbolizing sacrifice for justice against tyranny, with millions visiting the shrines of Imam Hussein and his brother Abbas annually, especially during Muharram and Arbaeen.
Significance & History
Battle of Karbala: The city is famous for the 10 Muharram 61 AH (October 10, 680 AD) battle where Hussein refused to pledge allegiance to the corrupt Umayyad Caliph, leading to his martyrdom along with family and companions.
Symbol of Sacrifice: The event is a foundational story in Shia Islam, representing the struggle against injustice, oppression, and for upholding true Islamic principles.
Holy Shrines: The city houses the golden-domed shrines (Maqams) of Imam Hussein and his half-brother Abbas, making it a major pilgrimage site second only to Mecca for many Shia Muslims.
Location & Pilgrimage
Location: A major city in central Iraq, southwest of Baghdad, known as one of Iraq's four holy Shia cities.
Arbaeen Walk: Millions of pilgrims walk to Karbala from across the world for Arbaeen, the 40th day after Ashura (the day of Hussein's martyrdom), creating the world's largest peaceful gathering.
