Activity Overview

The Serpentine Column (Yılanlı Sütun) is one of the oldest monuments preserved in Sultanahmet Square, the former Hippodrome of Constantinople. Originally erected at Delphi in ancient Greece, the bronze column was created to commemorate the Greek city-states’ victory over the Persian army in the Greco-Persian Wars.

The monument was transferred to Constantinople by Emperor Constantine the Great in the 4th century AD and placed at the centre of the Hippodrome. Originally formed by three intertwined serpent bodies, the column once supported a three-headed serpent sculpture at its top.

Today, the surviving bronze column stands as a remarkable reminder of the long historical connections between ancient Greece, the Byzantine Empire and Istanbul. Located close to Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, it is an important stop when exploring the historic Sultanahmet area.
