Activity Overview

The Menshikov Palace is one of the oldest surviving stone buildings in St. Petersburg and an important monument of the city’s early 18th-century architecture. Located on Vasilyevsky Island along the Bolshaya Neva River, the palace was built for Alexander Menshikov, a close associate of Peter the Great and the first governor of St. Petersburg.

Construction began in the early 1700s, and the palace became a prominent centre of social and political life during the reign of Peter the Great. Its architecture reflects the transition from traditional Russian styles toward the European-inspired forms introduced during Peter’s reforms.

Today, the palace forms part of the Hermitage Museum complex. Its historic interiors, decorative details and collections provide visitors with an insight into the lifestyle of Russia’s early imperial elite and the development of St. Petersburg as a European-style capital.
