Kazan Cathedral is one of the largest and most important churches in St. Petersburg, prominently situated on Nevsky Prospekt. Built between 1801 and 1811 by architect Andrei Voronikhin, the cathedral was commissioned by Emperor Paul I, who wished for the building to resemble St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

The cathedral is particularly famous for its magnificent semicircular colonnade, which opens towards Nevsky Prospekt and creates an impressive architectural setting. Built in the Empire style, the cathedral combines monumental proportions with classical decorative elements.

Kazan Cathedral also holds an important place in Russian military history. Following the 1812 campaign against Napoleon, it became a memorial to Russian military glory, and Field Marshal Mikhail Kutuzov was buried here. The cathedral’s principal religious shrine is the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God.
