Activity Overview

The Column of Constantine (Çemberlitaş Sütunu) is a historic Roman monument located near Sultanahmet, along the ancient ceremonial route of Constantinople. It was erected in 330 AD by Emperor Constantine the Great to commemorate the foundation of Constantinople as the new capital of the Roman Empire.

The monumental column was originally composed of large porphyry drums stacked on a marble pedestal and was crowned by a statue of Emperor Constantine depicting him as Apollo. Over the centuries, the column was damaged and restored several times, while its original statue and some of its upper sections were lost.

Today, the Column of Constantine remains an important landmark in Istanbul, reflecting the city’s Roman and Byzantine heritage. Its location near the historic Hippodrome, Grand Bazaar and other major monuments makes it a notable stop on a tour of Istanbul’s Old City.
