Activity Overview

The Baptistery of St. John (Battistero di San Giovanni) is one of Florence’s oldest and most significant monuments, located directly opposite the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Piazza del Duomo. It is an outstanding example of Italian Romanesque architecture, with its distinctive octagonal form and exterior decorated with geometric patterns of white and green marble. The present building was consecrated in 1059 by Pope Niccolò II.

The interior is renowned for its magnificent 13th- and 14th-century mosaics, marble flooring and historic artworks. The three entrances feature celebrated bronze doors created by Andrea Pisano and Lorenzo Ghiberti, including Ghiberti’s eastern doors, famously known as the “Gates of Paradise,” decorated with scenes from the Old Testament.

The Baptistery forms an important part of Florence’s historic Duomo complex and offers visitors an opportunity to experience the city’s remarkable religious, artistic and architectural heritage.
