Activity Overview

Anichkov Bridge is one of the most famous and recognizable bridges in St. Petersburg, crossing the Fontanka River on Nevsky Prospekt. The first wooden bridge was built here in 1716, making it one of the earliest bridges in the city. It was named after engineer Mikhail Anichkov, whose regiment was involved in constructing the original crossing.

The present bridge was constructed in 1841–1842 and is celebrated for its four magnificent bronze equestrian sculptures, “The Horse Tamers,” created by sculptor Pyotr Klodt. The bridge also features elaborate iron railings that are considered among the most notable in St. Petersburg.

During the Siege of Leningrad, Anichkov Bridge suffered artillery damage. Remarkably, traces of the wartime damage were deliberately preserved on one of the granite pedestals beneath the horse sculptures, making the bridge a lasting monument to the city’s wartime history.

Today, Anichkov Bridge is a prominent sightseeing landmark along Nevsky Prospekt, combining historic architecture, famous sculpture and the cultural heritage of St. Petersburg.
