LOCATION:
The palm-lined drive and six acres of flower gardens and lotus ponds
recapture the elegance and serenity of the Sukhothai
period.
The
hotel takes not only its name, but also its architectural inspiration
from Sukhothai, the first capital of Siam, reigning from 1238 to 1376.
Sukhothai means "dawn of happiness", and the Sukhothai period
is considered the golden age of Thai art and architecture.
The arrangement of the buildings, their low height and the rich vegetation
make The Sukhothai an oasis within central Bangkok. Like the palaces
of the Sukhothai period, the design of the hotel is based on symmetry,
courtyards, reflecting ponds and open-air arcades. Long processional
axes are accented by Sukhothai-style art and sculpture. The reflecting
ponds at the entrance mirror ceremonial bells and the lobby courtyard
reflecting pond mirrors a sequence of stupas. The strong right angles
and symmetry of the buildings are a softened by the tropical gardens
and lotus ponds of the central courtyard and by the gracious pavilions
of Celadon, one of the finest Thai restaurants in Bangkok.
The interior design of the public spaces and the rooms, again echoing
the royal style of Sukhothai, combines fine design and detailing with
luxury - rich Thai fabrics, teakwood, marble and mirrors. Custom-designed
furniture and lighting are influenced by traditional Sukhothai style
and modern simplicity. Each room and suite maintains the high quality
design and distinct style that define the architecture of The Sukhothai.
